Secondhand activewear - is it hygienic?

We break down some myths, our methods and inform you on some surprising facts about buying new.

Despite the increasing interest in buying second-hand clothing, it’s normal to question the cleanliness of wearing second-hand activewear in particular.

Second-hand can be great, but second-hand sweat? Evidently, less appealing. In this article we break down some myths, our methods and inform you on some surprising facts about buying new. That way, in future there’s no need to sweat the small stuff.

Covid-19 and clothing

We’re currently living through a global pandemic. Hygiene is of the utmost importance to us. There’s currently no evidence that Covid-19 can be transmitted through clothing, nonetheless ALL of our clothing follows a stringent cleaning process before being sent out to you. You can find more information on our dedicated cleaning page here.

Are new activewear items actually cleaner?

Aside from not knowing how many people have tried on clothes before a purchase, we often don’t know where or how that clothing has been stored before being purchased.

Big brand supply chains are often complicated and the garment you pick up on the shelf in the UK has likely travelled across the world, perhaps even multiple times before being put on a hanger in a UK shop.

To combat mildew and creasing of clothing in transit, many brands systematically use strong disinfectant chemicals such as formaldehyde, a known skin irritant. For this reason, even new retail items should always be washed before your first time wearing them.

By avoiding buying ‘off-the-shelf’, you are not only reducing your carbon footprint, you’re also avoiding some nasty chemicals.

How clean are second-hand items?

Some items of activewear have been loved and are worn out. But often, items still have a lot of life left in them.

But, what about the sweat?

Sweat is made up of 99% water, therefore if an item has been washed properly, risk of viral, fungal or bacterial transmission is extremely low. As previously stated, our cleaning process is very thorough. We use an eco-friendly, cruelty free and sensitive laundry detergent, however everyone’s skin is different so, we would still recommend washing your Goodfit garments according to the care label before wearing them.

Okay, so maybe you’re coming round to the idea of second-hand activewear, but you just don’t have the time to look?

Our dedicated team at the Good Fit spend time sourcing and curating only the best quality second-hand active wear to ensure you can enjoy our pieces as if they were new. Often, the pieces we source are barely worn, have only been worn once or not at all. We hope that aside from the cheaper price tag and having a clear conscience that the items you are buying are not ending up in landfill, you won’t even notice the difference when buying a Good Fit piece.

We do the leg work, so you can choose from the good stuff.
